Dejaste huella indeleble.

I came to Ferreirola four years ago for some Alexander lessons. I left with so much more - Cat generously shared her life for those few days with walks, drinks, the choir in Pitres. Her openness, energy, vision and determination were inspirational, and continue to be so. I was planning to return next year, and I will always think of her en las montanas. My thoughts are with her family and friends.

I cannot even begin to express my sorrow at the passing away of my former partner and dear friend, Cat. A huge and tragic loss for everyone who knew her. I was with her at the start of her dream when we bought that beautiful house together in Ferreirola. In the years that followed, I watched her battle against all the odds in establishing the music festival and school, and in the process she changed not only my life for the better, but that of countless others. Her spirit, vision, strength, patience and love of life, will live on in everyone she came in to contact with.
Rest in Peace my love.

Cat inspired me to carry on with my dreams. Her open-armed welcome of me gave me hope at a very difficult time in my life. Her dream is now shared by me, and I will take her memory forward in my life - it gives me stength and hope at hard times even now, many years later.
Thank you, brave and wonderful woman-of-the-mountains.

Cat inspired me to take up the cello at the age of 62. She very patiently taut me for 3 years before moving to Spain. She was an absolutely delightful person and her premature death is a terrible shock. I will play her a few scales this evening. Good night beautiful Cat.

This news is beyond 'sad'. Such a dear school friend - we shared many happy times together and in particular, bike rides through Bedfordshire in the summer holidays. Her talent for music was astounding and her gift of friendship a blessing. Heartfelt sympathy to 'Chocy's' family x

So so sad to hear of Cat's untimely death. I will remember the great times and laughter we shared at Bedford High School studying A'level Music and the great fun we had travelling with the Bedfordshire Youth Orchestra on tour to many different countries. You were a truly talented lady. My condolences to the family. With gentle Jesus now. xx

It has been many years since I was touched by Cat's presence; her open joy, inspired teaching, her healing hands, the wild parties she hosted after youth orchestra concerts. Often I have remembered her with warm fondness, and am saddened to hear of her passing. Seeing her spirit fly above the mountains.... fare well xxx

Cat, you were a wild spirit in the mountains and you will remain a wild spirit in the mountains, thanks to the memory we hold of you and the music which will continue and which will conjure up for us your freedom, your joy and your perseverance in the face of so many obstacles. We will miss you but we will not forget you or the purity and passion of your vocation to heal bodies and inspire minds and hearts through music and touch. Thank you for giving our son Will such an amazing opportunity to work with you on the festival that happy summer and for having us all to stay the following Christmas, even though you were unwell.

I first knew Cat through Alexander, when she got me to walk tall and put my head in the right place. Then I joined the choir in the Tahá, a group of great diversity, which she ran with serene good humour and great social, as well as musical, skill. I considered her to be my friend, and I will miss her greatly. The community of the Alpujarras will miss her, because she was a remarkable presence.

I think that the best way we can honour her legacy is to keep the festival, Música en las Montañas, running in the way that she always intended: as a free and independent festival for the ultimate benefit of the people of the Alpujarras. That will surely require the concerted effort of many people now, and I offer to help in any way possible.

I am so shocked and sad over cat's untimely death. I came to Ferriola every year to the Alexander summer school from Matts in Manchester and I had a wonderful time there. I had a great admiration for her. Her enterprise, courage and energy. She was a great inspiration.

Dear Cat,

even though you have unexpectedly left us, I wish to tell you, how much I appreciated your courageous efforts, to raise our individual and collective human potential through music.
As the song says: "You raised us up to stand on mountains". Thank you.

I pray that you are encompassed by the Love of the Creator, in continuing the journey of your sacred being. May the Peace that surpasses all understanding be with you, and with all your friends and family. God bless you.

With love, sadness, gratitude and deep respect, Raymond

Gracias Cat.

Since hearing the news of Cat's passing, I wake every morning at 4:15 am and all that is in my thoughts is Cat. How you've been taken from us too soon and how I wish I'd seem more of you since the 2 of us left the staff of CSYO.

You were a gracious, intelligent lady who made me laugh so very much. You had the most hilarious laugh!! I'm sad to think that I'll never hear your laugh again, or share funny stories over a beer or wine. You taught me a lot both musically and through Alexander technique. I share these often in lessons with students and I can hear their progress after giving them "Cat knowledge".

May you rest in peace. X

Unbelievable! Two weeks ago was the last time we met Cat in the paradise garden of the hotel Mecina-Fondales. This was for us a special place where we rehearsed three years ago with our Orquesta de Verano from the Netherlands and where all the musicians of the orquesta got inspired by her wonderful way of conducting. At this moment everyone is awfully sad.

Bas and I had met her while hiking nearby her house in Fereirola. She appeared suddenly when passing along with her dog and greeting became meeting. We felt immediately that from that moment on something beautiful could happen. And that really came true.
Two years later we organised a participation of our Orquesta de Verano in her Festival Musica-en-las-Montañas. She inspired us while rehearsing and performing at several beautiful places. We even accompanied a choir from Salobreña.
Within this Festival so many people got to know Cat and all the friends and musicians of Musica-en-las-Montañas y el Mar, which name we used from that moment.

We all greatly enjoyed the Alpujarras and Bas and I even came back for the 5th time.
So sad to remember that Cat told us about the many plans she had when we last met. Her new job in England for the winter, the projects for conducting next year and for this summer.
We admire her strength to follow her ideal to bring music and musicians to the Alpujarras and inspire people of which we felt to be a privileged group. Because we know that she lacked support of official organizations we realize that she did it all by herself.

We send our deep condolences to the family and friends of Cat. We will donate for the continuation of her Festival, her life.
It will never be the same though. We miss her tremendously, but cherish her sympathy, inspiration and her musical personality.

Cat inspired us from the Netherlands to come to the mountains in the south of Spain, bringing our instruments, making music, joining with Spanish mucisians and singers, giving concerts. Cat could bridge different cultures. I hope that her ideals of bringing music to every possible place will be carried on.

... And I will go away.
And the birds will stay, singing,
and my garden will stay
with its green tree
and white water well.
And every afternoon the sky will be blue and peaceful
and the pealing of bells will be like this afternoon's
peal of the bell of the high campanile.
They will die, all those who loved me
and every year the town will be revived, again
and in my circle of green white-limed flowering garden
my spirit will dwell nostalgic from tree to well.
And I will go away
and I will be lonely without my home
and without my tree with its green foliage
without my white water well
without the blue peaceful sky.
And the birds will stay
Singing

Muchas gracias por todo, Cat.

Cat was a huge inspiration to so many people, as a musician, as an Alexander Teacher, a budding and ethical politician who was fearless in confronting dishonesty. Above all she was warm-hearted, loving and generous - I and many many others will miss her. May her contributions to Music in the Mountains and the regeneration of the Alpuharras continue to flourish, while she rests in peace.

Chapi Pineda.

Mi vida no seria igual si no te hubiera conocido.

I am very sad about Cat who passed away so suddenly and so young. She was an admirable woman with a great heart for music and the (musical) development of the Alpujarra. Many times I enjoyed the concerts of Musica en las Montanas. And I loved being conducted by her in the Orquesta de Verano in summier 2014.

Cat, I don't know if you read my message of last week? I was looking forward to have news from you, but what I read yesterday was just impossible. I still can't believe it. I'm so sad! I remember my visit to you in Ferreirola a few years ago. You showed me the place and I was very impressed by your choice and all what you did there. I thought you were very brave and generous. But I should know that already, because the time we spent in the Alexander Technique school in London, where we trained together from 1998 to 2001, was incredible. You were a great inspiration and an entertaining friend. We explored the concepts and practice of Alexander Technique and that was such a pleasure to have you in the school. You were open and very clever, always ready to experiment. I remember your sweet way of saying "thank you" after a session. I remember the glass of wine we had sometimes talking about music or the Alexander Technique. Every morning you drove me to the school because I lived on your way, and in the car we had stimulating conversations, and sometimes you laughed because of my bad english, but very gently and tactfully you corrected me. You taught me a lot Cat, and I will miss you... such a wonderful person. But I know now that there is one more angel in Heaven!

A few memories of Cat: standing on a balcony with her in Ferreirola drinking red wine; Cat laughing at me for being scared of Ferreirola ghost stories; Cat explaining to dinner party guests that apple crumble is apple with 'migas dulces'. Most of all, I remember the humour, warmth and wisdom of her conversation. Thank you, Cat, for all that you gave me and so many others.

It is with great sadness that Mary and I hear the news of Cat's tragic death. We have known Cat for many years as our son David's cello teacher. She taught him when he was studying for his A level music. She was warm, inspirational and fun. After a gap of some twelve years, we met again quite by chance this Easter and had a long chat over coffee. She was full of joy and energy. I was so glad I met her again . She will always live in our hearts.

Shocking and sad news. Yvette and I got to know Cat on our holidays in the Alpujarras and enjoyed making music with her. I remember her charisma and musicality with the choir and vision for improving life in the Alpujarras through music. This is sad news.

I am so sorry to hear this dreadful and shocking news of my very dear friend and send my love to all Bassills.

I finally caught up again with her two years ago after a gap of far too many years. It was exciting to meet some of her many friends in the Alpujarras and get a sense of what she was doing there. I find it very difficult to accept that she is no longer with us.

She was a fantastic person who went her own way in life and was an inspiration to many. I will very much miss hearing from her and will always remember her with great fondness.

So sad to hear the news of Cat's passing - far too early. We have known her for many years in Sheffield, playing in orchestras and String Quartets and we brought our Quintessential Quartet to play, with Cat on Cello, in the very beginnings of the Festival, and for several years in a row. We came to love the area, made good friends and enjoyed wonderful hospitality and will always have fond memories of our times there with Cat. We always kept in touch and met up when she came back to the UK, and followed the Festival avidly through AlpujarraHoy. I hope the Festival will continue to flourish as a lasting testament to Cat's tenacity and enthusiasm. We'll be there at her concert on 17th September - wouldn't miss it!

What an awful shock. I never met Cat but we corresponded about wide range of subjects and it was a privilege to share her enthusiasms, the passion she brought to the music-making in her Festival mixed with her love of this wild region of Spain. Death is the condition of our birth, it is all very brief..thank you for all your hopes and aspirations, your wonderfully independent spirit, from Jeremy

I was so sad to hear about my dear friend Cat passing. It came as such a shock and I felt so much sadness and cried many tears. Cat was one of the most giving people I had ever met. Often selfless and always caring about causes bigger than her own life, she was strong, intelligent, talented, reliable and she had one of the kindest hearts I have ever had the pleasure to encounter. I know that she gave everything to help her local community and the world is surely a worse place for her passing. I really can't believe that she is gone and that I will never be able to talk to her again. I will never forget her. With all my love and may her dear spirit rest in peace.

This is devastating news. The music and Alexander worlds have lost a great teacher, thinker and spirit. Cat combined music with Alexander Technique like no-one else. She taught me both and for this I will be for ever in her debt. My deepest condolences to all Cat's family and friends.

I met the beautiful Cat Jary once hoping to go and work at her inspirational school. I still remember how easy she was to be with, her intuition and was struck then by what a visionary she was. We remained in touch as the school grew and grew. I was staying close by in Spain in 2011 and in regular email contact as Cat dealt with the political goings on in the village. She was a passionate connecter of people, of ideas and her community who will miss her. They will also be truly grateful for all she created and contributed. Cat you truly made a difference. Rest in peace you beautiful woman.

With Cat's help I brought my church choir to the mountains and sang in three churches. She played and sang with us too. Her understanding of local ways, her organisational fluency and her musicianship helped to make our experience life changing.

I am absolutely devastated to hear of Cat Jary's passing. Cat taught me to ply the cello, beginning when I was only 7 years old and continuing until I passed Grade 8. I had so many lessons with Cat and she was so knowledgeable, with a real passion for music. Although I lost touch with her for a while I spoke to her about the wonderful work she had been doing in Spain and the difficulties she encountered I developing her music school as some of the local authorities did not like it. Quite why anyone would not have loved what she contributed is beyond me - the real tragedy of the world today is that there are not more people like Cat. She will be terribly missed and my lasting regret is that I did not make it to Spain to see her. I hope that her legacy will be continued by others. Thank you Cat for all you taught me, and for being my friend XXX

Dear Cat, You were my friend for thirty-nine years and you will be greatly missed. You lived your life how you wanted and brought happiness to many, many people. We always had a good laugh. Now you have your angel wings and live on in heaven. Lots of love Caroline, Rob, James, Andrew and Oliverxxxxxxxx

Although I knew Cat for a short time, it was a pleasure to work with her. She was an inspiration and I really thought that we would meet again. I will never forget her. Condolences to the family and friends during this difficult time.

Cat gave to those around unconditionally, asking nothing for herself, only the enjoyment of music making.

We will miss your inspiration, energy and joyful presence. All the discussions, all the plans, all the evaluations we did late at night when we came back from concerts.
